A CAA Group project · Integrated photonics
From lithium to light.
Together with the Fundación Minera Argentina, we are exploring the industrialization of lithium derivatives and advanced materials for integrated photonics, the technology that uses light to transmit information. From Neuquén, for global value chains.
Under evaluation
Integrated photonics
Information that travels on light.
Integrated photonics uses light to transmit and control information through miniaturized optical devices. The growth of artificial intelligence and data centers is increasing demand for interconnects that can carry large volumes of information.
- Bandwidth
- More information over every link.
- Efficiency
- Interconnects that make better use of energy.
- Miniaturization
- Optical devices integrated on a chip.
Applications
Where light makes the difference.
- Artificial intelligence
- Data centers
- Telecommunications
- Semiconductors
- Scientific instrumentation
- Advanced sensors
- Quantum processing
These are fields where these materials and components are already in use. Their commercial maturity varies by segment.
The material
The silicon of photonics.
Lithium niobate is a compound with electro-optic properties: it allows light signals to be controlled with electric fields. Thin-film technologies are opening the way to ever more compact components for high-speed communications.
LiNbO3
Lithium niobate
A lithium derivative with electro-optic properties, key to integrated photonics.
Optical modulators
They control light with electric fields to encode information.
Thin film
More compact components and new architectures for communications.
Photonic integrated circuits
Optical functions brought together on a single chip.
Three distinct stages.
Mineral processing, advanced materials production and component manufacturing each require their own investment, know-how and equipment. The project is assessing which place to take in this chain.

Global scale
A global agenda, based in Neuquén.
The United States, Europe and Asia no longer seek only to secure critical minerals: they want to process them and turn them into technology. Latin America holds a relevant place in this shift, and Neuquén adds a concrete base: the network of industrial services, engineering, logistics and maintenance companies that grew with Vaca Muerta.
Critical minerals
A global demand
Lithium, rare earths and advanced materials for energy, telecommunications and artificial intelligence.
Neuquén
A business base
The capabilities that grew with Vaca Muerta, put to work for new industries.
Coordination
Four sectors, one agenda
Mining, energy, industry and logistics, working together.
Endorsements
Institutional backing.
Two business chambers endorse the initiative.
-
CEISA
Chamber of Companies, Industry and Services of Añelo. It brings together local capabilities for the Vaca Muerta value chain.

-
Mercosur Global Chamber of Commerce and Services. It promotes business, foreign trade, investment and partnerships between companies, institutions and markets. mercosurglobal.org (opens in a new tab, in Spanish)
The development of manufactured goods derived from lithium and rare earths is what will guarantee a genuine expansion of the sector.
Framework and project status.
Done
Working group
After several months of joint work, directors of the Fundación Minera Argentina took part in a working group convened by CAA.
In progress
Evaluation
Analysis of possible links between the mining, energy, industrial and logistics sectors.
Next stages
Feasibility
Feasibility studies, financing and access to technology and markets.
Regulatory framework
The regulatory framework and possible eligibility for investment promotion instruments, such as Argentina's Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI), will be analyzed, always subject to the legal requirements and the corresponding approvals.
Whether the project goes ahead depends on feasibility studies, the availability of capital, access to technology and the identification of markets.
